“Ships of the Desert”
15.5 x 11.7 cm
HERE'S THE STORY
This is a scene outside of a tourists’ desert camp a few hours’ drive outside of Muscat. Of course camels are the historical “ships of the desert” but the job is being taken over by trucks, especially ones like in this picture which is delivering water to the camp’s storage tanks. These lucky camels get to bask in the desert sun all day and only have to carry tourists for rides around the camp. Ever been on a camel? Their hair feels like a Brillo pad! And their exaggerated gait makes you feel like you are riding a ship on a very rough sea. Still, it was fun! It was for my daughter and me at least. My husband fell off – veeeery sloooowly – it was like watching something in slow motion so thankfully he wasn’t hurt at all. Just his pride. The camel wasn’t too happy about kneeling down for my husband to get on again. Such is the camel’s life.
