HERE'S THE STORY

This painting is another one I made from pictures taken at the Muscat Festival. Although the Bedouin still love the dune regions especially the Empty Quarter, most of them have found small towns to live in. They still buy and sell goats and camels. For the sake of the Festival-goers, there are camels around to see, pet, and ride. I loved the idea of putting a camel in the background as seen through the Bedouin-style “tent”. The tent is actually a roof and three sides made of heavy, woven carpets with the front open to allow for more air flow. The posts to hold it up are from date palms. You’d think date palm stems (they aren’t really trees) would be easy to cut through but an associate of mine who is with the Omani Heritage Gallery built one of these shelters and said it took a week to cut through just one palm – and that using modern tools!
