“After Monet: Impression: A Sunrise”
11 x 7 cm
HERE'S THE STORY
The first series of art classes I took in Oman was offered by Russian-born, Omani artist Anna Dudchenko. She had the class study the works of the Impressionists and we were to paint in the particular style of each painter. When we studied Monet, I wanted to do the painting that gave the name to this group of artists: Sunrise: An Impression. The original Monet work is currently in the Musee Marmottan Monet in Paris, France. I got to visit it during one of the trips to Paris that Chris and I took. It was so exciting to see the original! Suddenly, everything Anna was telling me when I painted the copy from a photograph snapped into place. “So THAT’S what she was talking about with the brushwork!”
I’ve done a series of these paintings, two with Anna, and one on my own. Copying works from the masters follows a long history of art instruction. The Impressionists themselves often obtained a “copyist’s license” to paint inside The Louvre. I love walking in the footsteps of the great artists who came before and learning new things in the process. And since I love the Impressionists, I hope to do more of these studies in the future.
